How to Play Pick 3
Pick any 3 digits from 0 to 9: Select a 3-digit number, where each digit can be from 0 to 9. Repeated digits are allowed, so numbers like 111, 050, and 739 are all valid.
Choose your play type: Select from Straight (exact match), Box (any order — 6-way for all-different digits, 3-way for one pair), Straight/Box (split wager covering both), or Combo (all Straight combinations in one bet). Each type has different odds and payouts.
Set your wager: Wager amounts are typically $0.50 or $1.00. Some states allow up to $5 per play. Higher wagers return higher fixed prizes.
Choose your draw: Pick 3 offers Midday and Evening draws. Decide which draw you're entering — some players prefer the same time daily, while others play both for double the daily opportunities.
Check the 3-digit result: After the draw, visit our Pick 3 results page. Compare the drawn 3-digit number against yours based on your play type. Midday and Evening results are shown separately.
Claim your prize at a retailer or office: Small prizes are redeemable at any authorized lottery retailer. Larger prizes require a visit to your state lottery district office. Check the claim period for your state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight requires your 3-digit number to match the drawn result in the exact same order. Box allows any arrangement of your digits to win. For example, if you box 1-2-3 and the result is 3-2-1, you win. Box offers better chances but a lower payout than Straight.
For Straight play, the odds are 1 in 1,000 (since there are 1,000 possible 3-digit combinations from 000 to 999). Box odds vary: a 6-way Box (3 unique digits) is 1 in 167, and a 3-way Box (one repeated digit) is 1 in 333.
A $1 Straight win pays $500. Box payouts vary by type: a 6-way Box pays $80 and a 3-way Box pays $160.
Most states draw Pick 3 twice daily — once at midday and again in the evening. Some states may have a single daily draw. Check your local lottery schedule for exact times.
Combo play is essentially buying all possible Straight combinations for your chosen digits on a single ticket. For 3 unique digits, that's 6 Straight combinations at $6 total. It is the most convenient — but most expensive — way to guarantee you cover all permutations.
You can only win one prize per play per draw. However, if your ticket has multiple plays (different rows of numbers), each play is evaluated independently and can each win separately.
Pick 3 draws are entirely random using certified draw equipment. No analysis of past results can predict future draws. Players often enjoy choosing personally meaningful numbers or using Box play to increase their coverage, but there is no mathematical advantage beyond proper understanding of the odds and payouts.
